Ron Miel Cocktails: 5 Easy Recipes (Plus the Classic Ways to Drink It)

Ron Miel Cocktails: 5 Easy Recipes (Plus the Classic Ways to Drink It)

If you've got a bottle of Ron Miel in the cupboard and you're wondering what to do with it beyond a straightforward pour, you're in the right place. Canarian honey rum is one of the most versatile spirits you can own — sweet enough to sip neat, smooth enough to mix, and interesting enough to make cocktails that actually impress people.

Here are five ways to enjoy it, from the effortlessly simple to the genuinely impressive.

First, which Ron Miel should you use?

Any of these recipes work beautifully with Artemi Ron Miel Honey Rum, it's the most recognised Canarian honey rum in the UK, smooth, amber, and honey-forward. For a slightly richer profile try Arehucas Guanche Ron Miel, which carries subtle oak and citrus notes from one of the oldest distilleries in the Canary Islands. For something lighter and more floral, Ron Aldea Ron Miel is made with La Palma honey on a family-owned estate, a hidden gem worth discovering.

1. Ron Miel over ice

The classic. The one they drink in Tenerife and Lanzarote.

You need: A rocks glass, a generous measure of Ron Miel (50ml), 2–3 ice cubes.

Pour the Ron Miel over the ice and leave it for a moment before drinking. The cold releases the honey and rum aromas and takes just enough sweetness off the edge. No garnish needed, no mixer required. This is how it's drunk across the Canary Islands and there's a reason no one's ever bothered to improve on it.

Best with: Artemi Ron Miel or Arehucas Guanche

2. Ron Miel Hot Toddy

A cold-weather essential. Also a genuine cold remedy.

You need: A mug, 50ml Ron Miel, 150ml hot (not boiling) water, a generous squeeze of lemon, an optional thin slice of fresh ginger.

Pour the hot water first, add the lemon and ginger if using, then pour in the Ron Miel and stir gently. The honey in the rum does the work here, you don't need to add anything else. Warming, soothing, and considerably more enjoyable than a Lemsip.

Best with: Artemi Ron Miel — the classic honey character works particularly well warm.

3. Honey Rum Lemonade

The easiest long drink you'll make all summer.

You need: A tall glass, 50ml Ron Miel, 150ml good quality lemonade, ice, an optional slice of lemon.

Fill the glass with ice, pour in the Ron Miel, top with lemonade and give it a gentle stir. The honey and citrus are natural partners. If you want to take it slightly further, a sprig of fresh mint and a squeeze of lime turns this into something that feels genuinely crafted.

Variation: Swap the lemonade for ginger beer for a honey rum mule, slightly spicier and very good.

Best with: Artemi Ron Miel or Ron Aldea Ron Miel

4. The Canarian Sour

A proper cocktail. Shaken, sharp, and impressive.

You need: A cocktail shaker, 50ml Ron Miel, 25ml fresh lemon juice, 15ml sugar syrup (or half a teaspoon of honey dissolved in a little warm water), ice, an optional egg white for froth.

Add everything to the shaker with plenty of ice. If using egg white, do a dry shake (no ice) first for 10 seconds, then add ice and shake hard for another 15 seconds. Double strain into a coupe or rocks glass. The egg white gives a beautiful foam on top, leave it out and it's still a great drink, just without the theatre.

Garnish with a twist of lemon peel or a couple of drops of Angostura bitters on the foam.

Best with: Arehucas Guanche Ron Miel the subtle oak and citrus notes in Guanche stand up beautifully to the lemon in this one.

5. Ron Miel Espresso Martini

Rich, boozy, and genuinely addictive.

You need: A cocktail shaker, 40ml Ron Miel, 30ml Artemi Caramel Vodka, a shot of freshly brewed espresso (cooled slightly), ice, 3 coffee beans to garnish.

Pull your espresso and let it cool for a minute. Add the Ron Miel, Artemi Caramel Vodka, and espresso to the shaker with plenty of ice. Shake very hard for at least 15 seconds, the vigorous shaking creates the foam. Double strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with three coffee beans.

The combination of honey rum and caramel vodka against the bitterness of espresso is remarkable. Both spirits are made by Artemi in Gran Canaria, which makes this an entirely Canarian cocktail, something worth mentioning to your guests.

Best with: Artemi Ron Miel and Artemi Caramel Vodka in this combination was made for each other.

Bonus: over vanilla ice cream

Not a cocktail, but worth mentioning, a generous drizzle of Ron Miel over a bowl of good vanilla ice cream is one of the simplest and most satisfying things you can do with a bottle. The honey rum soaks into the ice cream as it melts and creates something unexpectedly good. Try it once and it'll become a habit.
